Your drain
How the finder decides
- Sink type sets the drain family. Kitchen sinks take basket strainers. Bathroom sinks take pop-up drains. Vessel sinks take umbrella, push button or grid drains with a long body. Bar and prep sinks vary.
- Overflow sets the drain body. A bowl with an overflow needs a slotted body; a bowl without one needs a solid body (VIGO). If you are not sure, the finder shows how to check.
- Hole size checks the fit. Kitchen strainers fit a 3-1/2 inch hole, and some cover up to 4 inches (Houzer, Keeney). Bathroom drain holes vary (Hunker), so the finder tells you to match the range printed on the box.
- Finish only changes the search. It does not change what fits.
When the finder is not enough
- Thick sinks. Cast iron, fireclay, stone and thick vessel bowls need a drain body long enough to reach the locknut. Check the maximum thickness on the listing.
- Odd sizes. If your hole is well outside the common ranges, take the old drain to a plumbing supply store and match it.
- Lift rod faucets. If your faucet has a lift rod hole behind the spout, a lift rod pop-up keeps it working. A push button drain leaves that hole empty or capped.
Questions people ask
How do I tell if my sink has an overflow?
Look for a small hole or slot near the top of the bowl, usually at the front or back, below the rim. Bathroom sinks often have one; kitchen and vessel sinks often do not. If you see one, you need a drain body with overflow slots.
How do I measure the drain hole?
Take the old drain out, then measure straight across the hole in the sink from edge to edge. Do not measure the old flange on top: it is wider than the hole. The size guide has a tap-to-check tool.
Are the suggestions tested?
No. We have not tested these drains ourselves. The finder applies the fit rules from maker guides and plumbing references, then searches current listings for that drain type and finish.
